24 Grenache Merlot Chante d’Or, Vin de Pays d’Oc, France. Ruby red colour, the nose has expressive mature red fruits, liquorice and violets. Silky on the palate, the tannins are soft and well rounded. A luscious fruit finish. exceptional concentration from low yielding 80-year-old Gamay vines.

25 Merlot Chile. Good aromatic intensity and richness of black fruits like plum, leading to notes of menthol and fresh red fruits. In the mouth it is creamy and round, with soft. tannins and a long, savoury finish.

26 Sangiovese Terre del Sole, Puglia, Italy.Full bodied with typical cherry and spice aromas and a soft fruity palate, with good ripe fruit and an orange zest finish. An easy drinking red with soft tannins and is ideal as a partner to game, spicy sausages and cheese.

27 Rioja Crianza Bodegas Azabache, Spain. This excellent Rioja is well balanced with a soft seductive character typical of the Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes. It is in the traditional style of the Rioja having beena aged for three years in oak and bottle before release and exhibits intense fruits with hints of vanilla and a soft rounded palate.

28 Shiraz Geoff Merrill, McLaren Vale, Australia. This fantastic wine is great value and delivers an aroma and palate to show off the full spectrum and complexity of this varietal. Ranging from plum and mulberry fruit with hints of mint and eucalyptus, the flavour is enhanced with cedar and vanilla overtones, from ageing in American oak barrels.

29 Brouilly ‘Vieilles Vignes’ Cuvee de la Bruyere, France. The Bruyère vineyard is planted on a combination of mineral rich granite and schist soils, which influence the wine complexity. It is ripe with red fruits and rounded tannins, and shows.

30 Pinot Noir Totara Hill, East Coast Vineyards, New Zealand Ruby red with flashes of crimson, whilst on the nose there is a melange of red summer fruits, especially strawberry and raspberry. Soft and velvety, with fruit sweetness and subtle oak overtones.

35 Crozes Ermitage ‘le Grand Courtil’ Domaine Ferraton Père et Fils. Biodynamic/Organic, France. Aged in oak barrels, the wine shows a brillaint red, with ripe red fruit and leather notes. On the palate there are jammy red fruits with leather tones and delicate tannins.

36 Château Haut Badon Grand Cru St Emilion, France 2003. A pleasant nose with aromas of red berries and a smooth creamy texture gives this excellent claret its class and elegance. Generally these wines mature faster than the more structured wines from the Medoc, located further north where the Cabernet dominates.

39 Château Palmer 3me Cru Classé, Margaux, France 1986. Merlot contributes a softness and supple texture to the wine, which has a characteristic perfumed bouquet of redcurrants and sandalwood. Now approaching maturity, there are complex flavours of sweet spice, mushroom and game, finishing with soft ripe tannins.
